Resveratrol Shows Little Benefit to Health

Resveratrol is an antioxidant found in red wine that has long been thought to have great health benefits. For the last 20 years, it has been heavily promoted as the source of the French Paradox – the seemingly conflicting state where the citizens of France have been found to consume diets with a high intake of cheese and animal fats, yet also enjoy better overall health than North Americans with a lower rate of heart disease and stroke. Evidence pointed to the red wine that the French consumed, specifically, a certain compound in it that counteracted the negative effects of a high fat and cholesterol diet. Since those findings several decades ago, marketers have been adding the antioxidant to all manner of foods and dietary supplements, touting them as a natural way to combat aging, fight cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
